I happened upon a review of a book on th Truthines in science website. I realised that I sometime svisited the blog of the author of the book, and so pointed this review out to them. The results are below:

http://www.softmachines.org/wordpress/?p=253

Ok, its hardly a Churchillian paean about the dangers of creation science, but I think its a sensible reply, and fits with my general strategy of spreading the pain and embarrassment around. Make people aware of what is being perpetrated by TIS, how it reflects upon them, and suddenly TIS find they have a lot more enemies.

Nice one guthrie!

We'll get it linked in to the TIS pages in the wiki.

Thanks Chris- I do what I can, its been a very stressful year so far, so i can only contribute bits and pieces.
I did notice this in the Times letter from a few days ago:

Sir, Truth in Science (report, Sept 29) is seeking to enable school science students to follow the evidence for and against evolution wherever it leads.

We are commited to truthfulness and good science, and invite our critics to identify the alleged “scientific errors” of our website. Where convinced they occur, we will correct them.

So, I suppose I could make up a list of some of their errors, and some of the answers. It would have to be checked by a biologist though, and I would be relying upon Talkorigins etc a lot.

We're slowly working through this at BCSE but Chris Hyland was quoted in the Indpendent yesterday as saying that he had identified 21 significant errors in the material sent to teachers by TiS.

We are having a little debate in BCSE as the whether it is worth spending much effort on pulling the science to pirces. My own view is that if soeone wants to do it, it is a vaulable asset but that, right now, it is better to spend time on the letter writing to MPs, attracting new members, getting the teachers' unions involved and whatever.

I'd like both but it is a matter of resources and willingness of members

Roger

Chris Hyland has been putting a point by point debunking of the (ahem) 'science' points in the TIS material and the website.

We have a new wiki we're working on (it should 'go live' in the next few days), and we have both time and resources to do this.

My view is that a) it doesn't take very long to do, and b ) People are naturally going to ask if the claims are true and I dont like just sending people to talk origins. Theres no reason that it would intrude with sending letters etc.

Good points all- I think that getting letters out should come first, but on the other hand it doesnt take too long.
As for the rest of it, doing stuff like a wiki can be fitted in here and there, over a longer period. In my (limited) experience of this sort of thing, some people are suitable only for sitting in darkened rooms putting facts and figures together, others are great atpublic speaking and spreading the word, my point being that we should all do what bits we are good at.

Hi Jake,

I missed you joining there, only found you though checking up on who's joined recently (the forum seems to be moving fast at the mo).

Thanks for the info on Richard Buggs

Kyu

Cheers, I havent been on for a while so I missed your reply as well smile.gif

Best of luck with the campaign. From the sounds of it the response from the Dept. of education has been pretty encouraging.

It seems that the BCSE is briefing MPs with claims against TiS that it has not substantiated. We are concerned that busy MPs are taking these claims at face value.

We are willing to do all we can to correct any statements in TiS materials that can be shown, with convincing evidence, to be genuine scientific mistakes. However we cannot respond to unsubstantiated allegations.

Or in other words, they are setting themselves up to play the poor put upon martyr at whom unsubstantiated accusations are made. Which to my mind makes it important that we can point people at a proper set of refutations of their balderdash.
Of course, this is also playing their game, except that they dont seem to have expected the early day motion.

The website for Truth In Science has just launched 5 minutes ago (I know because I pressed the switch to make it go public, having helped out a bit with building the website).

Truth In Science is a UK organisation seeking to improve science education in the UK, especially in the area of theories of origins. It is hoping to promote teaching of alternatives to evolution, especially Intelligent Design, and encourage critical examination of evolutionary theories. I'm proud to have helped out as I've been able.
